How to Win a Street Fight

What's the secret to win a street fight? You may be surprised that I'm not going to talk about specific techniques or moves. My answer is all about attitude and mind set. If you want know how to win a street fight you have to be prepared to take some knocks and to inflict pain and injury.

Street self defence is in my view the answer to dealing with real street attacks and assaults. I have studied martial arts for over 15 years and continue to do so but I doubt most would work in real situations.

Traditional martial arts like aikido, taekwondo and judo just weren't designed for street fights and the type of situations we may encounter today. Being attacked or mugged either by one person or a gang needs a whole different approach. Years of training in traditional classes and martial arts courses are generally of little help.

In a real street fight is it right to use dirty street fighting moves? I would argue yes if it's about survival. for you or your loved ones. A martial art like aikido is fantastic for pinning down a person but to be honest to get to the point of being effective takes years of dedicated training. There are much quicker and more direct moves and techniques to get the job done.

In a real street fight I believe anything goes if your health or even life are under threat. There are even times it's right - and in fact necessary - to initiate the attack. That may surprise some people and I know many would be reluctant to do so.Soft targets are the points to go for. By these I mean the nose, testicles, neck and even eyes. We don't aim to cause injury or harm it's simply to shock the attacker and buy time. We can then either get away, call for help or deliver further blows or stikes. Such techniques are common in aikido and ninjitsu and are called  to as 'atemi.'
I am not against traditional martial arts training. Martial arts such as karate, aikido, kung fu and judo offer a range of wonderful benefits for both children and adults. Some of these benefits include getting and keeping in shape, developing self discipline, improving self confidence and learning respect and other important life skills. But if you want towin a street fight I don’t believe most of these traditional arts will offer much protection.
